Moss Engineering: What we do...
We are specialists
in Scott Motorcycles, Scott Engines, remanufacture and tuning

Moss Engineering was born in 1993 from over 40 years of front line experience in special purpose machine tool manufacture within 'Moss Machine Tools' (1947-1992)

During that time I was involved with some fascinating Special purpose machine tool projects from the design stage onwards, and continue to offer a consultancy service in both the areas of design and troubleshooting.
Further information can be found in the 'About us' section. Please refer to my industry references for your interest here.

Our wider engineering work has now long been coupled with an on-going love affair with Automotive engineering. It was, however, in the arena of Motorcycle road racing that i gained experience in the tuning and building of 'Scott' motorcycle engines and transmissions, and now offer my services in this area to those for whom only the best is good enough.

We also offer our services to owners of other machines who have damaged or unsatisfactory engines or transmissions for which neither parts nor specialists exist.

or where the quality of either, should they exist, is unsatisfactory.

See here an example of a 1955 'MM' Works Endurance racer that was reputedly a factory entry in the 1956 Milan-Taranto 1000 mile race.

This engine needed some redesign work  to the alternator drive and also attention to the crank assembly, and the vernier cam timing arrangement.

Seen also is a shot of the machine being dyno tested to verify final timing and carburation settings.

Like for many others, there is no spares or specialist situation for this machine, and this is often to the detriment of the engine and transmission units as they never recieve the degree of attention they require or that which they do recieve is lacking .

See here a 1932 Husqvarna, the engine of which is being repaired now  (early 2007)

Assessments:

We offer an assessment, which is charged accordingly to the time it takes, which is followed by a full illustrated report detailing the findings and our proposals for solution.

We are able to tackle all projects any redesign required and machining operations in house as well as grinding, internal and external.
For all other elements of a project that require the skills of an external specialist, we have a network of trusted contractors that we have worked with for up to thirty years. Our workshop is equipped with overhead travelling cranes throughout, so we are perfectly placed to deal with both motorcycle engines and small car engines.

Moss Engineering (A short history)

Experts in precision automotive re-engineering

Roger Moss spent over thirty years in the Special Purpose machine tools industry as part of the Leicester company  'Moss Machine Tools' , with customers in the Automotive, Aerospace, Defence and domestic appliance sectors.

The family company, started by his father Frederick Moss in 1946, was internationally reknowned for its insights into new manufacturing solutions and the very high quality of its products.

Its work with Rolls Royce in the 1980's to develop jet engine blade manufacturing technology was considered by their project manager to be central to the success that led to Rolls Royce winning the Queens award for innovation in 1989.

Moss Machine Tools was a victim of the decline in Manufacturing Industry, and finally closed its doors in 1991, not before manufacturing one of the most innovative special purpose machine tools that was created at the time for Ford Motor company.

Roger was cited by many as having been central to the success of Moss Machine Tools, and in his roles of Works Manager and Technical Director he was able to go some way to bring the realities of the shop floor metal cutting experience into the drawing office, to achieve designs that were both ground breaking and elegant in their simplicity.

Moss Engineering was started by Roger in 1992, to focus on small scale precision toolroom engineering.

Moss Engineering offer a comprehensive one stop shop for people who require precise solutions to Engineering problems.

Our capabilities include all the various steps from conception of an idea through design and drawing through to pattern making, materials selection through to castings and machining, Inspection and Final assembly.

Essentially.. If you have a problem which requires a degree of consideration toward its solution that you might not find in your local machine shop... then call us and just have a chat.

And, If we cant help you, then we might know people who can!

Moss Engineering and Motorcycles

We have been involved in Motorcycle Engineering for many years and have several bikes ourselves. Roger has raced many bikes in the last thirty years from a 750ss Ducati to his famous Scott Flying Squirrel.

We have an ideal situation for Motorcycle engineering because of the size involved. We can handle anything up to the size of a small car engine as we have overhead travelling cranes throughout, but larger than that and it exceeds our capabilities here, though work can be project managed in local engineering companies Click here to see our large engine work..

We are experts in the reconditioning of Scott Motorcycle engines.

  •  S&B Model 1024 VSL  Variable speed toolroom lathe with large range of collets and chucks.
  • Kearns “S” type horizontal toolroom boring machine
  • Thiel 158 Vertical / horizontal jigmil with compound tilting table and large range of toolroom accessories.
  • Thiel 162 Five axis horizontal spindle jigmil.
  • J&S 1314 universal grinder with capacity to carry out surface, external, internal, tool & cutter grinding plus many special applications.
  • Honing machine
  • Blast cleaner
  • Compressor

These basic machines are backed up by a large quantity of tooling such as rotary tilt tables etc and tooling support equipment.  The machine shop is covered by an overhead travelling crane system to facilitate movement of heavy work pieces and tooling.

Assembly and inspection outline

  • Reference Readout scales with calibration to DIN standards
  • Reference, inspection and working sets of measuring slip gauges.
  • Very wide selection of conventional and special measuring tools
  • Two quality Inspection microscopes with projection facility for form grinding
  • Hardness testing equipment
  • Three point bore gauges up to 100mm and other types for larger sizes
  • Precision surface table
  • Engine build table with multi axis adjustment capacity
  • Overhead travelling crane system
  • Assembly benches

Product example. Two axis workpiece manipulator

Please be aware that the work on Scotts is only a very small part of our experience and capability.

Our past activities included,

  • Defense projects
  • Jig and Tool
  • Special machine tools.

The photo shows a two axis harmonic drive workpiece manipulator for use on a special CNC laser machine.

The components are aero engine blades that require a patten of cooling holes to be cut in.

The holes to be cut are fan shaped and are cut “on the fly”

The 150mm turntable must be true in axis, plane and swash within 0.010mm TIR.

We also made the laser beam manipulator that was the other major equipment component.

If you have a project that requires a good solution with an eye to controlling cost, Why not contact us?
